"Through stories, we share not information but experiences, and it is experiences that shape and define our values."
Timothy E. O'Connell, Ph.D., Tend Your Own Garden, 1999
Stories are essential in defining the work of The Center. These stories illustrate the tough issues that humans face every day when making decisions about their health, and they demonstrate the importance of this Center's work.
If you have stories that you think would be appropriate for the website -containing ethics or advocacy issues, please feel free to forward them to the Center for review. Stories can be sent through email to: Centerforethics@aol.com
Tom and Anne
Anne's elderly, single brother Tom lived in a nursing home, and now he refused to eat. Anne turned to The Center for information about end-of-life issues and for advice about Tom's options.
Lori
Lori was in the hospital for hip surgery. Her mental state was poor, so Lori's friends asked The Center to help them understand her medical and financial issues. The Center facilitated discussions between Lori's friends and Lori's lawyer, and advised her friends on end-of-life issues.
John Doe
John and his family struggle to make ethical decisions about life-sustaining treatment.
DW
DW, a resident of a local neighborhood, suffered a stroke in July of 1992. She was taken to a nearby hospital paralyzed on the left side.
GKM
Six years ago GKM and her family contracted a form of influenza that has plagued their family ever since. The disease took a serious toll on the family, and everyday tasks became difficult to accomplish. With the help of The Center, GKM and her family were able to organize their finances and update their insurance coverage.
